How does Rossetti use setting for effect?

Rossetti uses setting for symbolic effect of the setting not for physical. As the poem is called convent threshold this is to replicate the decision the couple has to make symbolically to cross the convent threshold to the devote themselves to God to then be together again in heaven. Convent threshold seems to replicate the life of Abalard and Heilouise as they felt they had sinned on earth as they had been secretly married and felt they needed to repent so they could go to heaven and be together in heaven which is very contradicting as they can't seem to have their love on earth but it is acceptable in heaven. The opening to paragraphs show how earth is second best compared to heaven and also the was it is structured as heaven is explained first before earth showing how heaven is more important and higher up than earth. The heavenly imagery "golden skyward stair" shows how symbolically they have a choice to make to leave second class earth and mount they stair on the journey to this golden and heaven like place where they can then be together and "love with old familiar love"
